A trade group representing Oregon hospitals appeared before the Ninth Circuit on Monday, challenging a state law that requires agency approval for health care mergers and acquisitions as unconstitutionally vague. Valley Medical Center, where financial struggles recently forced the closure of several hospital units and outpatient clinics, is ending its affiliation with UW Medicine after more than a decade. Saad Ehtisham will step into the leadership role, effective July 30, the Morristown-based healthcare system announced June 5. Atlantic Health noted Ehtisham's patient-centric approach and his collaboration with clinical leaders. He currently serves as senior vice president and president of acute care operations for Novant Health. Based in Winston-Salem, N.C., the integrated care delivery network comprises a $10 billion portfolio treating 7 million patients annually. Novant Health's network includes 19 hospitals, 41,000 employees, and more than 8,600 independent and employed clinicians working across nearly 900 sites in North and South Carolina.
Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman refused to nominate anyone to Nassau University Medical Center's board — saying in a surprise announcement Tuesday he was protesting Gov. Kathy Hochul's 'illegal' takeover of the hospital. Blakeman, a Republican, was set to announce his picks for the NUMC board of directors after at least 10 executives resigned in protest to New York state's takeover of the facility — but instead said he will not be naming anybody to the Democratic governor's 'puppet board.'
If passed, the bill would limit compensation for a hospital's executive and clinical leadership to no more than 10x the salaries of the lowest-paid patient-facing employees. The bill would also require the ratio of frontline workers to administrative employees fall in line with national averages.
