The Connecticut Office of Health Care Access has approved a proposed affiliation between the parent companies of Hartford Hospital and the Hospital of Central Connecticut. The proposal now needs one final approval from the Federal Trade Commission. The plan calls for the Hospital of Central Connecticut's parent company to become part of Hartford Health Care Corp., which now includes Hartford Hospital, MidState Medical Center in Meriden, Windham Hospital, and several other healthcare providers.

A doctor whose research and public statements caused widespread alarm that a common childhood vaccine could cause autism was banned from practicing medicine in his native Britain for ethical lapses, including conducting invasive medical procedures on children that they did not need. The General Medical Council applied its most severe sanction against the doctor, Andrew Wakefield, 53, who abandoned his medical practice in Britain in 2004 as questions intensified about his research and set up a center to study childhood developmental disorders in Texas, despite not being licensed as a physician there.

Most recently, Novello was vice president assistant general counsel for Molina Healthcare, where he implemented regulatory compliance, risk management, and HIPAA government investigations. Before that, he was senior healthcare counsel at K&R Group.
The American Academy of Professional Coders has announced the appointment of Deborah Grider as president, effective July 1st. She succeeds Reed Pew, who was recently appointed chairman of the board of directors for Eli Research's healthcare group, which includes AAPC, Inhealthcare, ASHIM, and Practice Builders. Grider joined AAPC one year ago as vice president of strategic development.
