Last month, the agency told Whoop that its tracker is operating as a medical device, and must therefore get FDA certification. Whoop pushed back. "Blood Pressure Insights is a wellness feature, not a medical device," it said at the time. "It's designed to help you understand how your body responds to daily life, not to diagnose or treat any condition."
ChristianaCare just opened its first neighborhood hospital in West Grove, Chester County. It's at the site of the old Jennersville Hospital, which shut down in 2021. The smaller hospital has an emergency department that's open 24 hours a day, along with 10 inpatient beds. ChristianaCare plans to open similar hospitals in Aston and Springfield, Delaware County.
Jackson South Medical Center has sped up plans to shutter its labor and delivery unit and is now planning to close the ward on Friday, weeks earlier than expected, citing staffing issues. The sped-up closure comes six weeks after workers were told in a July 2 email from the hospital’s CEO that the unit would shutter in October. The Herald recently obtained the CEO's email through a public records request. Nearly a week later, the closure date changed to Sept. 1. Now, the hospital says the unit is expected to shutter today.
Nike co-founder Phil Knight is donating $2 billion to the Oregon Health and Science University's Knight Cancer Institute, the single largest donation ever to a U.S. university, college or health institution. The Knight Foundation said on Thursday the gift that will be used to shift the scientific approach to cancer treatment, research and patient care outcomes. As part of the gift, the Knights will partner with cancer research pioneer Dr. Brian Druker.
