First lady Melania Trump arrived to Philadelphia's Thomas Jefferson University Hospital -- albeit about an hour behind schedule due to a mechanical issue on her plane -- for an event focused on neonatal abstinence syndrome. The hospital has provided care to families and newborns with the syndrome, also call NAS, for more than 45 years. One of the components of the first lady's "Be Best" initiative is helping children dealing with the opioid crisis.

Nearly all physicians take on significant leadership responsibilities over the course of their career, but unlike any other occupation where management skills are important, physicians are neither taught how to lead nor are they typically rewarded for good leadership. Even though medical institutions have designated “leadership” as a core medical competency, leadership skills are rarely taught and reinforced across the continuum of medical training.
The whole point of health insurance is protection from financial ruin in case of catastrophic, costly health problems. But a recent survey of people facing such problems shows that it often fails in that basic function. The survey, of some of the country’s most seriously ill people, found that even with health insurance, more than a third of the respondents had spent all or most of their savings while sick.
Catawba Valley Medical Center is urging patients to check their health insurance statements following the discovery of a hack involving patient information. The hospital investigated the incident in late August and found out that three hospital employee email accounts were breached between July 4 and Aug. 17, according to a release from the hospital.

Baptist Health South Florida and the Medicare Advantage plan of Leon Medical Centers announced Monday that the plan’s approximately 45,000 members can go to some of Baptist’s hospitals starting next year. Under the arrangement, patients enrolled in Leon Medical Centers Health Plans will be able to be treated at Baptist Hospital, South Miami Hospital, Doctors Hospital, West Kendall Baptist Hospital, and the Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, effective Jan. 1.
