A federal lawsuit accuses UPMC of holding a monopoly over workers, and now DOJ has filed a letter of interest in this case. The class action lawsuit was brought by a former nurse in Erie. Nurses at University Hospital in Newark were in negotiations to avoid a strike Monday as their contract was set to expire at midnight.
Officials with the Health Professionals and Allied Employees, the union representing the nurses, said the healthcare workers were prepared to do whatever it takes to have their demands met.
A group of about 30 Corewell Health nurses chanted, 'Who are we? Teamsters!' as they marched to the National Labor Relations Board on Michigan Avenue. The cards, they say, show substantial support to unionize roughly 9,600 registered nurses at the hospitals in Dearborn, Farmington HIlls, Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak, Taylor, Trenton, Troy and Wayne.
