Luigi Mangione wants a laptop in jail so he can help prepare his defense for his trial for the broad daylight execution of the UnitedHealthcare CEO, his lawyers said. But, prosecutors are objecting — citing threats that have already been made to witnesses in the extremely high profile case. Mangione, 26, has asked for access to a restricted laptop, solely for viewing case evidence like videos, photos and 15,000 pages of records, according to court papers filed in his criminal Manhattan Supreme Court case for the murder of healthcare head Brian Thompson.
A Yale University economist contends the proposed merger of Union Health and Terre Haute Regional Hospital would not be good for consumers. Zack Cooper, an associate professor at Yale and the director of the university's Tobin Center for Economic Policy, in a news release sent Tuesday contends the merger would raise commercial health care prices of the two entities 10% to 30%, raise local insurance premiums by 3% to 10%, and lower nurses’ wages by approximately 5%.
Renton's Valley Medical Center announced Tuesday it is laying off 101 employees after federal Medicaid benefits were ended. Elizabeth Nolan, Valley Medical Center's chief communications and philanthropy officer, confirmed the layoffs. The laid-off employees were in the non-clinical, support, leadership and ancillary departments. The hospital does not expect patient care to be impacted by the job cuts.
The FBI on March 26 advised that, after extensive investigation and intelligence review, they have not identified any specific credible threat targeted against hospitals in any U.S. city. The FBI advised if they receive credible threat information, they will immediately advise any identified potential targets and, if appropriate, alert the broader health care sector through the AHA, the Health-ISAC and other appropriate channels.
