Next up in Thomas Jefferson University's consolidation wave: Kennedy Health System, which operates hospitals in Cherry Hill, Stratford, and Washington Township, said industry sources, including one with direct knowledge of the negotiations. A deal to make Kennedy a part of the rapidly expanding Jefferson would be the Center City system's fourth since chief executive Stephen K. Klasko led the breakup of the former Jefferson Health System in 2014. Both parties declined this week to confirm a deal. "Kennedy Health has nothing to report on this matter at the present time," a Kennedy spokeswoman said.
Should experts who testify in trials have to reveal how much they are paid for their testimony? A Middle Tennessee representative has proposed a bill that would prevent any public release of an expert's compensation. Though the bill would apply to all expert witnesses, Rep. Mark Pody, R-Lebanon, said he fears that revealing such information would prevent doctors specifically from providing crucial opinions. Pody said he heard from three doctors that this was a concern. Sen. Mae Beavers, R-Mt. Juliet, is carrying the senate version of the bill. Pody said he believed government should be completely transparent, but citizens have a different expectation of privacy.
An innovative program in Boston shows medicine is an art as much as a science. It teaches physicians in training to use their eyes and ears to connect with patients and enhance the practice of medicine, reports CBS medical contributor Dr. Tara Narula. At the Brigham and Women's Hospital, doctors, nurses and Harvard medical students are helping reshape medical education. By day, members of the integrated teaching unit, or ITU, focus on treating patients. But at night, they fix their sights on works of art. At the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, art becomes a catalyst to strengthen clinical and interpersonal skills, softening the hard science of medicine with creative expression.
Dr. David H. Newman seemed to have it all: an impressive post in emergency medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, a prominent and growing public presence as an expert in health care reform, a wife who is a doctor, two young sons, and a gracious home in the New Jersey suburbs. So when he was arrested on Tuesday and charged with sexually abusing two patients under his care in the emergency room, the reaction from his wide circle of colleagues was disbelief. Dr. Newman, 45, has been accused of drugging, groping and masturbating on a female patient and groping another in episodes several months apart, the authorities said.
Patterns of genetic response to infection can be used to tell if a cough is caused by bacteria, viruses, or neither, and have promise for slowing the inappropriate use of antibiotics, researchers reported.
