You may have noticed when you last subscribed to a magazine that the company put you on an automatic renewal plan. Instead of sending you a letter when your subscription was about to lapse and asking you to take steps to renew, most now keep your credit card on file and keep extending your subscription unless you take steps to stop it. In general, people have a bias toward the status quo — and a bit of laziness. That's why similar auto-renewal policies are showing up all over the place, in public radio memberships, say, and gym memberships (and for subscriptions to The New York Times).
When waiting for the receptionist to call your name in the doctor's office, you are powerless. You can't go anywhere. You don't know how long it will take. There isn't much to do. Some people play Candy Crush or Threes on their iPhone. Others tweet things tagged #waitingroom. And some of us read. At least, in a good-faith effort, there's usually a thick pile of magazines. But when you go over to pick through the stacks, there's another problem. Most of the magazines are crappy and old. Why? After all, your doctor and the rest of the people working in the office are smart and presumably just as interested in good reading material as you are. So what's up with the subpar selection?

Nearly 20 percent of U.S. consumers with credit records — 42.9 million people — have unpaid medical debts, according to a new report by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The findings suggest that many Americans are being trapped by debt because they are confused by the notices they get from hospitals and insurance companies about the cost of treatment. As a result, millions of Americans may be surprised to find they are stuck with lower credit scores, making it harder for them to borrow to buy a home or an automobile. "When people fall ill and end up at the hospital with unexpected bills, far too often they have entered into a financial maze," CFPB director Richard Cordray said in a speech to be delivered Thursday in Oklahoma City.
With the deadline approaching for individuals to renew healthcare plans purchased on HealthCare.gov, Aetna has begun to see a surge in customers for 2015, the insurer's new president said on Thursday during a meeting with analysts and investors. HealthCare.gov has a Dec. 15 deadline for individuals to renew their 2014 plans or select new ones before it will automatically re-enroll them for next year. Enrollment for individual plans is open until Feb. 15, which were created under the 2010 Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare. Karen Rohan, whose appointment was announced earlier this month, said that the company expects a surge in enrollment over the next few days and that it was "starting to see" that already.
Tenet Healthcare Corporation notified state regulators Thursday it was withdrawing its applications to buy five hospitals in Connecticut, ending a two-year effort by a national for-profit hospital chain to enter the changing Connecticut market. Its decision came 10 days after the state Office of Health Care Access proposed setting strict controls over staffing, services and pricing as a condition of approving Tenet's application to buy Waterbury Hospital and convert it from a non-profit to a for-profit institution. The withdrawal is a financial blow to struggling Waterbury Hospital and is likely to be a major political and fiscal complication for the administration of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, the General Assembly and the city of Waterbury, where its two hospital are a crucial source of jobs.
