One hospital system is about to control care for the most populous city in Alabama, unless antitrust officials decide to intervene. The nonprofit Huntsville Hospital Health System has agreed to acquire the 180-bed Crestwood Medical Center and its affiliated outpatient clinics from Community Health Systems, a for-profit hospital chain, for $450 million. CHS said it expects the deal to close in the second quarter of this year. Crestwood is located 2 miles down the road from Huntsville's flagship hospital and is the only hospital in Huntsville and the surrounding northern Alabama region that isn't owned by Huntsville Hospital Health System. The deal therefore appears to give Huntsville a de facto monopoly on inpatient services. This would give the hospital system pricing power over patients, workers, and employers in the area — and creates a new test for antitrust cops, who have vowed to crack down on anticompetitive practices in healthcare.
