Financial margins at Mass. hospitals tightening, or in the red

Massachusetts hospitals are continuing to face serious financial headwinds, according to a new annual report from the Center for Health Information and Analysis, which shows widespread operating losses and only limited signs of stability across the state’s health care landscape. The report, covering hospital fiscal year 2024, indicates that the median operating margin for acute care hospitals dropped sharply to -2%, compared to 0.2% the year prior. The data reflect ongoing cost pressures, even as hospitals reported increased revenues. Total margins also fell to 0.6%, down from 2.2% in 2023. Only 39% of acute hospitals ended the year in the black, adding to the concerns over the sustainability of some hospital operations across the state.
