Largest layoffs in Pa. so far this year include the closings of a coal mine, a hospital and a prison

Things have settled a bit so far in 2021. During the first half of 2020, 20 employers each notified the state of plans to lay off more than 350 people. But in the first half of 2021, just three employers submitted WARN (the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notices involving that many workers. Although it is important to note that many of the WARN notices submitted to the state last spring came during the state shutdown and varied from precautionary notices to temporary and permanent layoffs.
