Nine Institutions Selected to Lead ACGME Patient Safety Initiative

The institutions will form a Patient Safety Collaborative that will create and test “a framework for residents and fellows to engage with their learning environments in promoting a culture of safety.”

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) announced the nine institutions it has selected to participate in the next phase of its Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments initiative. The institutions will form a Patient Safety Collaborative that will create and test “a framework for residents and fellows to engage with their learning environments in promoting a culture of safety.”

The Patient Safety Collaborative includes the following institutions:

• Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina
• Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina
• University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine
• Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis
• Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York
• St. Vincent’s East Family Medicine Residency Program in Birmingham, Alabama
• University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington, Kentucky
• University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia
• University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut

Following the Patient Safety Collaborative, the ACGME plans on form additional collaboratives to focus on resident and fellow engagement on the other five focus areas of the Clinical Learning Environment Review program: care transitions, fatigue management (well-being), healthcare quality, professionalism, and supervision.
