Two pediatricians say they were fired from University Hospitals after raising concerns about patient safety. Dr. Lauren Beene and Dr. Valerie Fouts-Fowler filed a lawsuit Monday in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court against the hospital for claims that include wrongful termination and defamation. The doctors say they warned hospital leaders about delays in critical lab results, severe understaffing in the emergency room at Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood and shortages of childhood vaccines and life-sustaining medications. Instead of fixing the problems, they say, University Hospitals fired them in June.
