The board of trustees for the Medical University Hospital Authority voted unanimously Monday to approve the purchase of Palmetto Primary Care Physicians for $111 million. The move was made to expand primary care access across South Carolina, officials said. The acquisition, approved at a special meeting on March 2 and effective March 3, brings Palmetto Primary Care Physicians into the MUSC Health system as a not-for-profit entity. Palmetto Primary Care Physicians, the state's largest independent multispecialty care practice, includes 31 physicians, 95 advanced practice providers and 40 medical practices offering services such as physical therapy, urgent care and specialty clinics. The practices operate across the Lowcountry, Midlands and Myrtle Beach regions.
