Blue HPN will be available in 55 markets starting in January 2021.

Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) announced Wednesday morning that it will launch its own high performance network (HPN) named "Blue HPN."

Blue HPN will be available in 55 markets nationwide starting in January 2021, according to the company.

The insurer's existing value-based network has already delivered an average of 10% total cost of care savings and up to 16% savings in some markets.

Jennifer Atkins, vice president of network solutions at BCBS, told HealthLeaders that the 70% of the company's membership is already in a value-based contract, adding that the Blue HPN will act as an extension of that 74 million member base.

"We're looking to align financial incentives and support providers with data and insights to be able to engage them in new ways that also brings a critical mass of membership to support those providers in their value-based arrangements," Atkins said. "We're focused on partnering with providers who are committed to the quality measures as well as the total cost of care savings. Unique to BCBS is our ability to be responsive to local market needs and tailor the approach to local health needs."
