How 'cowboy' doctors drive up the cost of healthcare

American health-care spending is exorbitant: Twenty-two percent of U.S. personal consumption spending goes to doctors, hospitals, health insurers, pharmaceutical companies, and other providers of goods and services for treating the sick. Add in spending on new hospitals and medical equipment, and health care constitutes 16% of the entire U.S. economy.
