Vanderbilt University Medical Center is now an independent, not-for-profit health system, and its chief thinks its new-found agility combined with its clinicians and research make for an "exceedingly bright" future. Splitting from the university gives it more dexterity to expand or respond to changes in health care without having to involve the university in the approval process. People are getting medical care in new, different places, and VUMC has been trying to respond. Its clinics are across the greater Nashville area and it's got affiliations with hospitals and providers in the region.
