Warnings of crisis at Miami-based Jackson Health System went unheeded

Marcos Lapciuc, treasurer of Miami-Dade's Public Health Trust, sent an e-mail last July to the Jackson Memorial Hospital network's chief financial officer, raising red flags about alarming losses, ballooning charity care, and escalating bad debt still on the books. Lapciuc warned CFO Frank Barrett about "doubtful accounts" that Jackson had no hope of ever collecting, but Barrett never sent a response, the Miami Herald reports. Lapciuc says failures by former Jackson financial administrators are primarily to blame for the crisis now urgently facing hospital and county leaders, the Herald reports.
