Financial woes put Alabama's rural hospitals on life support

Alabama has lost six hospitals in the last eight years, and will soon lose another. Lakeland Community Hospital in Haleyville will close at the end of the year, leaving Winston County without a hospital. The situation for rural hospitals is bleak across the country, but Alabama is facing an acute crisis. The Alabama Hospital Association says 84 percent of the state's rural hospitals operate in the red.
