Houston Methodist Hospital is notifying affected transplant patients that an encrypted laptop and some paper files containing personal information were stolen Thursday, according to media reports. The information on 1,300 transplant patients included names, social security numbers, dates of birth and some medical information, according to a statement from Methodist posted on KHOU.com. In addition to contacting the Houston Police Department and performing its own investigation, Methodist is also contacting each patient to offer free identity theft protection service subscriptions for one year.
