Partners HealthCare reports data breach

Partners HealthCare said it is notifying 3,300 patients that it has suffered a major data breach that includes patient information. In a press release, officials from the health care organization, which includes Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, North Shore Medical Center, and Newton-Wellesley Hospital, said that a group of employees had received "phishing" emails, and had provided information in response to the emails believing they were legitimate. The information allowed for unauthorized access to these employee's email accounts within the Partners HealthCare network. Partners said it took steps to secure the email accounts and contact law enforcement, as well as beginning an investigation into the phishing attack.
