WI state panel approves UWM purchase of Columbia St. Mary’s site

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's plan to buy the neighboring Columbia St. Mary's Hospital complex for $20.2 million won unanimous approval Wednesday from the state Building Commission. The commission's 8-0 vote came after UWM announced last week it had signed a purchase agreement with Columbia St. Mary's Inc. The 11-acre site has seven buildings totaling 828,000 square feet, as well as 962 parking spaces. The vote paves the way for the project to proceed, pending a final vote by the UW System Board of Regents next week. The hospital's buildings could be used to consolidate health sciences academic and research functions now scattered around campus, said LeRoy Stoner, an associate professor and chairman of a faculty committee studying uses for the property.
