A potentially deadly bacteria has been detected in medical devices at the University of Washington Medical Center, leading the hospital to treat some of its water supply and take the devices out of service. The Legionella bacteria that was discovered can cause a serious type of pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease. There have been four recent cases of this disease at the medical center. The disease was present in two patients who died, but no direct link with patient infections have been confirmed.
