Stroke, or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. and the second leading cause of death worldwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This condition occurs when blood supply to the brain is suddenly interrupted, causing brain cells to die. The two main causes of stroke are a blocked or burst artery.
