Legislation sponsored by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Bill Nelson, (D-FL) would increase the number of residencies by 15,000 over five years. Preference would be given to programs that serve rural areas and train physicians in community health centers and outpatient centers. Increasing the number of residencies will cost between $10 billion to $15 billion over 10 years, according to Schumer's office.
