Dowling led the transition from a network of Long Island-based hospitals into one of the nation's 10 largest health systems.

Long-serving Northwell Health CEO Michael J. Dowling will step aside on October 1 and transition to CEO Emeritus at the sprawling Long Island-based health system he has led for 23 years, Northwell announced Wednesday.

Dowling will be succeeded by another Northwell veteran, John D'Angelo, MD, EVP of the system's central region, who joined Northwell more than 25 years ago as an emergency physician at Glen Cove Hospital.

Under Dowling's storied leadership, nonprofit Northwell evolved from a network of Long Island-based hospitals into one of the nation's 10 largest health systems.

Northwell became New York State's first integrated health system in 1992 and now includes 28 hospitals across New York and Connecticut, employing 104,000 people, with more than 14,000 affiliated physicians, 1,000 care venues, and a broad network of home care, rehabilitation, and end-of-life services.

Earlier this month, Northwell finalized its merger with Danbury, CT-based Nuvance Health, acquiring three western Connecticut hospitals – Danbury Hospital (including the New Milford campus), Norwalk Hospital and Sharon Hospital.

Dowling also championed innovation and education at Northwell, collaborating with the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, the Zucker School of Medicine, the Hofstra-Northwell School of Nursing, and Northwell's Center for Learning and Innovation.

The CEO is also an outspoken advocate against gun violence, the leading cause of death among children in the United States. Dowling recognized it as a critical healthcare issue and he mobilized more than 60 healthcare CEOs nationwide to support gun violence prevention.
