Using the most recent Census Bureau data, covering the calendar year 2024, we find that the typical working family (a family with at least one worker between the ages of 18 and 64) spent $3,960 per year on healthcare (calculated as their share of insurance premiums plus any additional out-of-pocket expenses). Ten percent of working families paid with the highest levels of expenditures more than $14,800 out-of-pocket for their healthcare. And more than one of every eight workers (13.3 percent) are in families that spent greater than 10% of their annual income on healthcare.
