The oral arguments in California v. Texas were held via telephone conference one week after the presidential election.

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) heard oral arguments today in California v. Texas, the legal case that could determine the fate of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

California v. Texas (No. 19-840) and Texas v. California (No. 19-1019) arguments were held via telephone conference and livestreamed to the public due to the pandemic. Arguments started at 10 a.m. ET and concluded at noon.

Arguments for defending the ACA came from California Solicitor General Michael Mongan, and Donald Verrilli who is representing the House of Representatives.

Arguments for striking down the ACA came from Texas Solicitor General Kyle Hawkins and the acting Justice Department solicitor general Jeffrey Wall.

This case, held a week after the presidential election, is among the first cases heard by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who was confirmed in late October.
