Nathaniel "Nat" Richardson Jr. will serve as president and CEO of the Maryland health system.

University of Maryland Capital Region Health (UM Capital) has named Nathaniel "Nat" Richardson Jr. as the new President and CEO effective May 18.

Since July 2019, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph L. Wright has served as the UM Capital interim president and CEO.

"I am very humbled and honored to have been selected to join University of Maryland Capital Region Health as President and CEO,” Richardson said in a press release. "I was drawn to the passionate commitment from executive leadership, medical staff, the Board of Directors, and others who are laser-focused on providing high-quality patient- and family-centered healthcare to residents in Prince George’s County and the surrounding area. I am ready to partner with staff, community leaders, and elected officials to help the organization reach its fullest potential.”

Richardson has over 34 years of healthcare experience. He worked within the Huntsville Hospital Health System in Alabama where he brought three competing hospitals together to form Decatur Morgan and served as President of Decatur Morgan Hospital. He also worked within the Texas Medical Center in Houston at St. Luke's Episcopal Health System for 18 years.

"[Richardson] will lead the organization at a pivotal time in its history. UM Capital Region Health continues on its journey to … transition to its new flagship hospital in Largo, and transform the Health and Wellness Campus in Laurel," said University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) President and CEO Dr. Mohan Suntha.

In 2017, UMMS affiliated with Dimensions Healthcare System, which was renamed UM Capital Region Health.

UMMS will assist UM Capital in opening a new medical center, which has an estimated cost of $543 million and projected to open in March 2021, to serve Prince George's County.

"I have every confidence that [Richardson] will deliver on his charge to expand the vision and strategy for UM Capital," Dr. Suntha said.
