The University of Miami president will serve as the interim CEO during the search for a permanent leader.

University of Miami Health System (UHealth) CEO and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs Dr. Edward Abraham is retiring at the end of May, the health system announced in a press release. University of Miami president Dr. Julio Frenk will serve as interim CEO through July 1, while a search for a permanent CEO is underway.

Dr. Abraham joined the Miller School of Medicine as dean and chief academic officer in July 2017 and became CEO and EVP in January 2018. During Dr. Abraham's tenure as CEO, he "strengthened UHealth’s position in the areas of health care delivery, patient satisfaction, quality of care, research strategy, and education," according to the press release.

“We are so thankful to Dr. Abraham for the leadership he brought to the medical enterprise and the impressive gains made during his time here,” said president Frenk.

President Frenk will continue to lead the University while also serving as interim CEO at the health system. A leadership team called JOLT (Joint Operations Leadership Team) was developed to support Frenk and oversee day-to-day operations of the health system, which includes the interim chief administrative officer, interim chief operating officer, dean of the Miller School of Medicine, executive director of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, executive director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, chair of the Department of Medicine, and chair of the Department of Surgery.

“It is an opportune time to bring the unique background and experience of our president, Julio Frenk, to the forefront. President Frenk, as CEO, will be providing his leadership on all fronts,” said Dr. Abraham. President Frenk served as a former minister of health of Mexico, an executive at the World Health Organization, and the former dean of the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University.

"We are confident in a seamless transition as President Frenk, a global authority in public health, steers our health system through the current COVID-19 crisis," said Chairman of the UHealth Board Stuart Miller in the press release.

“We are so thankful to Dr. Abraham for the leadership he brought to the medical enterprise and the impressive gains made during his time here.”
