Feds give $2.2M grant to surgeon whose warnings were dismissed by Parkland

Dr. Shahid Shafi, one of the former trauma surgeons at UT Southwestern Medical Center, who blew the whistle on lax resident supervision and possible billing fraud, has helped his new employer, Baylor Health Care System, secure a $2.2M grant from the US Education Department. Baylor Health Care System won the five-year award to help Shafi and his research team continue studying traumatic brain injuries. The grant specifically goes to the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas, which happens to include UTSW as a collaborator.
