Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez is seeking new powers that would allow him to fire current Public Health Trust board members and appoint a seven-person emergency panel to oversee Jackson Health System. The ordinance is set to be presented March 3 to county commissioners who are scheduled to discuss the hospital system's financial woes in an all-day meeting. Jackson Health System, which is governed by the 16-member Public Health Trust, is in financial crisis and may run out of money by May. The system is expected to lose $229 million this year unless Jackson Chief Executive Eneida Roldan makes drastic cuts, the Miami Herald reports.
