Money woes not new for Catholic hospitals

Catholic hospitals have a rich history in Boston, where they proliferated as waves of immigrants from Europe arrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But specialists say challenges confronting Boston's Catholic hospitals are common among the nation's 624 Catholic hospitals, which, according to the Catholic Health Association of the United States, treat one in six acute care patients in the country each year.
