Almost one-third of the 46 million uninsured in the United States are 19 to 29—the age group that is the most likely to be without health coverage since so many work in part-time or entry-level jobs. This group stands to reap substantial benefits from the healthcare act's expansion of coverage. According to a report last week from the Commonwealth Fund, most of the 13.7 million young adults who are uninsured could gain coverage when the act goes into full force in 2014—either through public programs like Medicaid or by buying private policies on competitive insurance exchanges established by the law.
