Free clinics' role uncertain with expanded health insurance coverage

Raising money for the Greater Milwaukee Free Clinic has never been easy, but this year is proving to be harder than most. The clinic — one of a dozen or so free clinics in the Milwaukee area — ended last year with an $18,000 shortfall in its $65,000 annual budget. The drop in support may stem from the uncertain role free clinics will play with the expansion of insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act. One of the challenges facing the Greater Milwaukee Free Clinic and similar clinics is gauging how quickly that will happen. "No one really knows," said Kathy Schneider, who started the clinic with George Schneider, her husband and a physician, in 1995.
