Jackson Health System and the University of Miami say they plan to fight an application by Kendall Regional Medical Center to establish its own trauma center in Florida's Miami-Dade County. At present, the only trauma center in Miami-Dade is Ryder, the Jackson facility staffed with UM doctors that provides emergency surgical intervention for such cases as auto accident injuries and gunshot wounds. Eulinda Smith, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Health, said the state has slots for six trauma centers in Miami-Dade and each year sends out invitations to hospitals to apply, the Miami Herald reports.
