Opinion: Don't oversimplify hospital safety rankings for consumers' sake

I am all for public accountability. I want patients to know how other hospitals are doing. And I want our patients to know how we are doing. I believe that we had to start somewhere as a country, which is what the CMS Hospital Compare's star ratings, as well as several other quality and safety benchmark programs, have done. But we can't stop here.
