Metro Health deploys 'The Germinator' to fight hospital-acquired infections

Metro Health Hospital began using the Intelligent Room Sterilization system — also known as IRiS and aptly nicknamed The Germinator — in July to sterilize operating rooms, surgical prep areas and post-operative recovery units each evening, as well as in rooms where a patient has been in isolation because they had an infection.

Metro’s goal is to eventually use the device in every room, Paul-Cheadle said.

IRiS, produced by Auburn Hills-based Infection Prevention Technologies, has the potential to reduce costly hospital-acquired infections, which often require doctors to re-admit patients.
