An incentive program that rewards primary care doctors who better manage patient care and reduce unnecessary claims netted Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan at least $80 million in savings last year, the nonprofit insurer said. The program encourages primary care physicians to take a more active role in the care of their patients, including providing enhanced access to their offices, same-day scheduling and more options for a patient to communicate with the doctor and staff. Participating doctors receive a 10% higher reimbursement rate for patient office visits.
