A pair of San Diego philanthropists gave $20 million to the West Wireless Health Institute to jump-start product development at the La Jolla, CA, facility, which could emerge as a leading player in the international movement to improve medical care with cell phones and other devices. The latest donation from Gary and Mary West will help the institute recruit more engineers. Those workers will create equipment that relies on wireless networks to track patients' health conditions, remind them about medications, or alert their doctors when a problem surfaces.
