The Department of Veterans Affairs has changed its process for veterans to get medical care from non-VA providers, removing a requirement that a referral to community care be reviewed by another VA doctor. The VA announced Monday that it is enacting a provision of the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act that will help ease veterans' access to medical services from private providers.

The U.S. measles picture grew by 23 cases, according to a Friday update from the CDC. A total of 1,024 confirmed measle cases have been reported from 31 jurisdictions, with 14 outbreaks (defined as 3 or more related cases). Ninety-two percent of confirmed cases are outbreak-associated. Of the cases, 96% have occurred in people who are either unvaccinated or have unknown vaccination status, and 128 (13%) of case-patients have been hospitalized, including 69 children under the age of 5. Three deaths have been confirmed to date, including two in unvaccinated school-aged children.
The exact process remains unclear. In some cases the spark that starts the disease process might be some kind of insult—perhaps a passing virus, gut microbe or long-dormant infection. Or maybe in some people, simply getting older—adding some pounds or suffering too much stress could trigger inflammation that starts a cascade of harmful events.
The proposal would increase residency slots, boost mental health services, and streamline licensing for healthcare workers in a state where patients often wait months for appointments.
