DaVita says it was hit by a ransomware attack that encrypted certain elements of its network, and some of its operations remained disrupted despite interim measures. While the dialysis service provider continued to provide patient care as it took measures to restore certain functions, it could not 'estimate the duration or extent of the disruption at this time', DaVita said in a regulatory filing.
Approximately 93 million computed tomography examinations, or CT scans, are performed on 62 million patients annually in the United States — but the radiation from that process can raise the risk of future cancers. Now a new study is projecting just how many cases of cancer could be linked to CT scans. In the study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine on Monday, researchers estimate that over the lifetime of those millions of patients, about 103,000 radiation-induced cancers are projected to result from CT exams done in 2023.
The cases, performed by Dr. Erik Wilson, mark the first clinical experience with the highly anticipated robotic platform. Wilson, chief of minimally invasive surgery and elective general surgery at UT Health Houston, performed Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery using Ottava at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.
The layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services included dozens of employees at the Health Resources and Services Administration who were working on the technology upgrade, which has been years in the making and was set to launch next month. As many as 1,200 of the roughly 1,400 health centers were set to go live with the upgrade on May 31 — a milestone that is unlikely to be met, given the number of critical federal staff who were fired.
Mayo Clinic has hired Micky Tripathi, a former top health technology official under President Biden, to be its chief AI implementation officer, a role that involves overseeing the technology's development and adoption within the sprawling health system. Tripathi most recently was the assistant secretary for technology policy and the national coordinator for health information technology. He led the government's efforts to establish guardrails for use of AI by federal health agencies and private businesses.
