Could hospitals turn away patients for religious reasons?

Can a doctor in a hospital emergency room refuse to treat someone in need because of a disagreement over religious beliefs? In Michigan recently, a pediatrician didn't want to take on a lesbian couple's child as a patient, and it became a highly buzzed-about news story. Here in Indianapolis, one local hospital doesn't want to run into that kind of situation. Eskenazi Health is joining a number of businesses – including Cummins and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce – in opposing a state legislative proposal aimed at shielding religious freedom. The health care system said it feared the legislation could create a "gray area" where its employees could decline to treat patients by claiming religious objections to patients' personal characteristics.
