EHR use increases in EDs, outpatient departments

The use of electronic health records is increasing in hospital emergency departments (EDs) and outpatient departments, a government report has found. In 2011, 84% of EDs reported using an electronic health record (EHR) system, a considerable increase from 46% in 2006, according to the report from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) . In outpatient departments, use of an EHR system rose from 29% to 73% during the same period, according to study authors Eric Jamoom, PhD, MPH, and Esther Hing, MPH, both of the NCHS.
