Opinion: Establishing clear guidelines for hospital mergers

After years of contested negotiations, Rhode Island’s two largest hospital networks — Care New England (CNE) and Lifespan — proposed a merger in September.  Timothy Babineau, Lifespan’s president and CEO, declared that “By working together, Lifespan, Care New England, and Brown University can create a fully integrated academic healthcare system for the people of Rhode Island.”
