Nurses assaulted by patients called an 'under-reported epidemic'

The number of nurse assaults is higher than police and fire injuries, said Kevin Mealy, Oregon Nurses Association spokesman. "Culturally, nurses run to an emergency, but police and fire take self-defense steps to protect themselves," Mealy said. "That's not always the case in a hospital setting. In many cases, the violence is assault."
