In a normal year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) sweeping rule mandating that hospitals disclose prices to consumers would be one of the biggest stories in the healthcare sector.
Since the coronavirus pandemic broke out in early 2020, however, the word “normal” has all but dropped from the lexicon. And so, in a nation preoccupied with COVID-19, the price transparency mandate slipped into place on January 1, 2021, with little fanfare beyond health sector trade publications.
