The bill would establish the "Office of Rural Health" within the office of the Director of the CDC and would address the unique needs and challenges of rural healthcare.

Today, on National Rural Health Day, the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) joined the Rural Health Action Alliance (RHAA) to urge Congress to consider the Rural Health Equity Act (H.R. 5848 & S. 3149).

The bill, which was introduced to the House and the Senate on November 3, would "direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish within the Office of the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the Office of Rural Health, and for other purposes."

Essentially, the bill would establish the "Office of Rural Health" within the office of the Director of the CDC and would address the unique needs and challenges that rural healthcare faces.

"NRHA is excited to show our support for the Rural Health Equity Act, which offers a long-term solution to help address ongoing rural health disparities that have grown during the pandemic," NRHA CEO, Alan Morgan, said in a statement. "As a founding member of the Rural Health Action Alliance, NRHA will continue to fight for rural health equity today and all year."

The RHAA, which was created in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic by healthcare providers and facilities who care for rural Americans, is committed to "advancing long-term solutions, including encouraging vaccination, expanding telehealth, and ensuring providers receive equitable resources," according to a press release.

The third Thursday of each November marks National Rural Health Day, a day to "celebrate the power of rural." This year, the national holiday falls on November 18, a day in which President Joseph Biden Jr. signed a proclamation, promising to improve health inequities in rural communities.
