Tennessee emergency doctors back bill redefining malpractice

Tennessee emergency physicians are backing a bill in the legislature that aims to protect them, on-call specialists, and hospitals from "unreasonable lawsuits" when they're rendering emergency care, The Tennessean reports. Under the bill, the definition of medical malpractice would be changed from "negligence" to "gross negligence." Proponents say the current definition makes it too easy to sue emergency physicians, who are required by federal law to treat all emergency department patients regardless of their abilities to pay.
