Quiet quitting, defined as performing only the assigned tasks of the job without making any extra effort or going the proverbial extra mile, has gained attention in the press in recent years.
A Gallup poll found that about 50% of the workforce were "quiet quitters" or disengaged.
It may be even more prevalent in healthcare, where a recent survey found that 57% of frontline medical staff, including NPs and physician assistants (PAs), report being disengaged at work.

Nurses at Brigham and Women's Hospital "voted overwhelmingly" on Tuesday to ratify a new contract that will increase wages and avert a threatened strike, union officials said in a statement. The Massachusetts Nurses Association, the union for 4,000 nurses, negotiated a wage increase of up to 30% over the next two and a half years for Brigham nurses, and a quadrupled hourly rate for some on-call nurses, the statement said. After 29 bargaining sessions over 11 months and intervention by a federal mediator, union nurses voted in July to authorize a one-day strike in hopes of jumpstarting negotiations.
Union nurses and health care workers at Allegheny Valley Hospital had approved a new three-year contract, thus averting a threatened strike.
The agreement “includes a significant investment in frontline staff,” according to a statement from SEIU Healthcare PA. Union members will see an average 16% increase in pay and compensation. Some members will see increases as high as 36%.
All currently employed nurses will earn a minimum of $40 an hour; health care workers — patient care techs, housekeepers, dietary staff and transporters — will earn a minimum of $20 per hour.
Ninety-seven percent of nurses voted in favor of authorizing a strike at Mission Hospital in Asheville over Labor Day weekend.
This display of unity does not guarantee a strike will occur, but gives the union’s bargaining team the authority to call a strike if deemed necessary.
This vote has the potential to give the union much more leverage in its negotiations with HCA, the Tennessee-based for-profit hospital chain that acquired the hospital’s parent company, Mission Health, in 2019.
